Cinco De Mayo & Supermoon

Perigee Moon

Big Moon A’Risin

Will it be Coronas or Blue Moon on May 5th? This blog is about viral content, but sometimes I stray into my geekdom. This Cinco De Mayo will be one to remember. Not just because of all the great Mexican food or copious amounts of cerveza, but something else very rare will occur – a supermoon.

At 8:34 p.m. PST, the moon will be at its closest perigee or distance to the earth. This phenomenon doesn’t occur often. The last supermoon was on March 19th, 2011. However, this one will be closer than last year which means it will appear fuller, bigger.

And, of course, rumors and speculation are starting swirl about the end of the world. The Mayan apocalypse isn’t supposed to occur until December, so we have a few more months.

So, amidst the celebrations I plan to have my camera in hand. You should too.
